I grow up watching period dramas set in ancient China, Japanese and Korean kings and palaces, and heroes like England’s Robin Hood and France’s Three Musketeers. I remember wondering why we had no equivalent legend and ruing the mantra that Singapore’s history started with Stamford Raffles. And oh! I have not forgotten my secondary school history lessons on Sang Nila Utama, that idle prince, that top one percent whose sole claim to fame was his hunting trip! Snug amongst the rest of the ninety-nine percent, I found it hard to identify with this prince swimming with gold aplenty.
